What is Alpha Gal Syndrome (AGS)?
Alpha Gal Syndrome is a serious, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction to a sugar molecule (galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose) found in most mammal meat and products, typically triggered by a Lone Star tick bite. The body's immune system develops an over reaction to the sugar, resulting in mild to aggressive symptoms. It has more recently been determined that other types of ticks also transmit alpha gal, and many possible symptoms may appear from the transmission, ranging from mild irritations to anaphylaxis. Symptoms are often delayed by 2–6 hours include hives, itching, swelling of body parts (especially lips, throat and tongue), stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, and breathing difficulties. The onset of symptoms may occur when a person ingests the infected meat or dairy product coming from a particular mammal or when exposed to any number of cosmetics, vaccines, gelatins or medications that contain the molecule.
Antihistamines, steroids, epinephrine (EpiPen) and avoidance of exposure to any alpha gal containing foods or products is the only course of symptom management available to patient with the syndrome. This means that a patient must live with the uncertainty of possible further progression of histamine responses that could arise from inadvertent exposure to foods or products containing alpha gal in the future.
The SAAT technique is a simple and highly effective approach to treating AGS! It is currently the only known treatment for this syndrome and is non-invasive
